Parish Ministries
The backbone of any parish is its volunteers. The same is true for St. Stephen of Hungary Parish. Our parish ministers serve a vital role in our liturgies and in creating a community that is warm and welcoming.
If you would like to serve as one of our parish ministers, please call 212-861-8500 or send us an email.

Altar Servers
You can enhance our parish worship services by assisting the celebrant in a dignified and prayerful manner. Boys and girls, as well as women and men, are invited to become Altar Servers. Volunteers can serve once a month or, if they have the time, more frequently.
Church Chronicle Ministry
The Sunday "Chronicle" keeps our parishioners up-to-date on the news and events of the parish. Our small group of parishioners who organize and type articles for the "Chronicle" would be pleased to welcome new volunteers. No experience is necessary except familiarity with computers and an eye for layout. If you can volunteer once a week or once a month, why not consider joining our "Chronicle’s" staff?
Coffee Hour
On the second Sunday of every month after the 11:45 a.m. Mass, parishioners are invited to enjoy a moment relaxing over coffee and pastries as they catch up with old friends and meet new members of our parish. You can help make us reach out to all our parishioners by volunteering once a month or once every other month. Our volunteers buy pastries and juice, set up beforehand, serve food, and clean up afterwards.
Credit Union Ministry
St. Stephen of Hungary Credit Union provides people of modest resources an opportunity to deposit personal funds at an advantageous rate of interest. The Credit Union is a member of the national Credit Union Administration (NCUA), a federal agency which insures deposits up to $100,000, and is regulated by New York State. If you have a financial background and can volunteer to serve clients on Friday evenings, please consider helping this important ministry once a month.
Eucharistic Ministry
Eucharistic ministers serve a vital role during Sunday Mass and daily liturgies. Typically, volunteers serve at two Masses per month. They also set up for Mass and prepare the vessels for the next liturgy. This simple, but profoundly sacred ministry, is open to all our parishioners.
Family Mass Ministry
You can bring joy to children as they participate in our Family Mass, which takes place during the 5:30 p.m. Mass on the first Saturday of the month from September to June. At this lively and beloved Family Mass, children are invited to participate as hospitality ministers, lectors, liturgical dancers, artists, and musicians. After Mass, adult volunteers host a reception with pizza and juice in the back of the church where both children and adults greet old friends and make new ones. They also serve on the Family Mass Planning Committee and lend a hand during Mass.
Lectors
Lectors proclaim the scriptures during worship services, helping those in attendance experience the life-giving Word of God. Typically, our lectors serve at one or two Masses a month. They also lead congregants in the intercessions and may announce upcoming parish events. Participate more fully in Mass by becoming a lector.
Ministry of Hospitality
A kind word, a warm smile and an outstretched hand is all we ask of ministers of hospitality. Why not join this great corps of volunteers who welcome parishioners and visitors to our worship services? Volunteers serve twice a month, distributing worship programs before Mass, assisting with collections during the liturgy, and distributing parish bulletins at the conclusion of services.
Parish Council
The Parish Council draws upon the diverse talents, cultures and background of the parish. Under the guidance of the Pastor and with the input from the parish staff and parish community, the council serves as a collaborative and consultative body for the life and mission of the Church and the parish. Help us make our parish a dynamic and faith-filled community by offering your time and talent to the Parish Council.
Social Fundraising/Street Fair Ministry
The Social Fundraising Committee creates those special programs that not only raise funds in support of our parish, but provide our parishioners with an opportunity to socialize and enjoy themselves – all while promoting community awareness of its diversity and uniqueness. Volunteers coordinate the St. Stephen Street Fair in September as well as the Christmas Fair and Giving Tree in December. If you can help out at any of these events, please let us know.
