Discerning Your Vocation
All Christians are called to a vocation -- a way of life that leads us on our journey to God. For most individuals, their vocation is to marry and have children. Others are called to marry but may not have children. Still, others are called to live a single life whether as a layperson, priest, brother, or nun.
At the heart of all true vocations is the call to love. As the Trappist monk Thomas Merton wrote:
|
Infinite sharing is the law of God's inner life. He has made the sharing of ourselves the law of our own being, so that it is in loving others that we best love ourselves. |
For some, the call of a vocation is crystal clear. They know in their hearts the path that God is calling them to follow. For others, God's call can take years to discern -- especially if He is calling us in a direction we may not want to go!
Yet, as Mary, the Blessed Mother of Jesus, showed us, it is only through surrendering ourselves to the will of God that we can obtain true happiness as we strive to make real the Kingdom of God.
If you are struggling to discern your vocation, please know that we will offer you whatever help we can. You can schedule an appointment by calling 212-861-8500 or by sending us an email.
Though we desperately need new priests and religious, be assured that our goal is not to "recruit" anyone. A true vocation must come from the heart and be inspired by God. Our goal is only to offer you help and guidance so that, through prayer and reflection, you may find your vocation and know the peace and joy of a fulfilling life centered in Christ.
In the words of St. Francis of Assisi,
|
Most High and Glorious God, enlighten the darkness of my heart; give me Lord, a correct faith, certain hope, perfect charity, insight and wisdom, so that I may carry out your holy and true will. |
